In the ever-evolving digital world, cybercrime is constantly seeking new ways to exploit security vulnerabilities in businesses. A recent study from CSC’s Domain Security 2023 Report reveals a worrying trend: the rise of online scams through the use of .AI domain extensions owned by major companies. This insidious practice includes sophisticated phishing attacks and malware downloads, putting both businesses and their customers at risk.
Worrying Trends Revealed by the Domain Security 2023 Report
According to the report, nearly half of the companies listed in the Forbes Global 2000 have lost control of their .AI domain names, which are now registered by third parties. Cybercriminals are cleverly exploiting the popularity of artificial intelligence (AI) by registering these domains for malicious activities. This trend has resulted in a staggering 350% increase in domain disputes involving .AI extensions in 2023.
Major Risks to Business Security
The CSC study highlights significant risks for businesses. Hackers continue to exploit “look-alike” or homograph domains, creating domain names that closely resemble those of Global 2000 brands. These domains are then used to launch phishing attacks, impersonate digital identities, and infringe on the intellectual property of the targeted companies.
The Threat of Phishing Emails and Malicious Content
The report also highlights the growing threat of phishing emails and malicious content. Over 79% of look-alike domains are owned by third parties, increasing the risk of phishing emails and interception of electronic messages. These domains can also point to websites not associated with the legitimate brand owners, while hosting malicious content that can harm both the company’s reputation and customer trust.
Brand Protection in the Digital Age
Mark Calandra, President of CSC’s Digital Brand Services division, warns: “It is essential to quickly detect and disable look-alike domains to prevent website redirects, online fraud, and malware attacks. Due to media coverage on the potential malicious use of AI, proper registration of .AI domains is crucial to protect brands.”
In a world where technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, it is imperative for businesses to stay vigilant and take proactive measures to protect their brands and customers from insidious online threats.
